Five serves of grain foods a day is the recommendation for good health and protection from cancers. A serve is:
- 1 cup of cereal
- ½ cup of muesli
- 1 slice of bread
- ½ a bread roll
- 4 or 5 crispbreads
- 1 scone
- 1 cup of cooked pasta
- ½ a cup of cooked rice
To boost your grain intake:
- Choose the breakfast cereal with “wholegrain†at the top of the list of ingredients
- Use muesli as a crumble on desserts
- Chose wholegrain breads
- Put wholegrain bread in the blender and then keep the crumbs in the freezer for high-fibre toppings and coatings
- Snack on popcorn
- Use brown rice in preference to white
- Use unpearled barley instead of pearl barley
- Use wholemeal pasta
- Try some of those polenta recipes you keep seeing
- Make pilaf and tabouli
